Georgia Women's Institute Honors Local Women Leaders

Atlanta, GA – (August 17, 2007) - The newly formed Georgia Women’s Institute (GWI) recently honored four prominent women leaders by presenting them with awards that will hereafter be given in their honor. Awardees include Nellie Dunaway Duke, Mary Lou Frank, Linda T. Muir and Linda Torrence.

In the future, these awards will be given to deserving women around the state based on criteria to be announced later. Awards include:

  • The Nellie Dunaway Duke Award for Leadership & Public Service
  • The Mary Lou Frank Award for Leadership in Health & Education
  • The Linda T. Muir Award for Leadership in Business & Law
  • The Linda Torrence Award for Leadership in Journalism & Arts. 

The awards were presented at GWI’s inaugural Leadership Awards Banquet with the theme, “An Invitation to Lead.” Keynote speakers were Dr. Betty Siegel, President Emeritus, Kennesaw State University and founder of the Siegel Institute of Leadership, Ethics and Character and The Honorable Carol Hunstein, Presiding Justice of the Georgia Supreme Court.

The Georgia Women’s Institute is a nonprofit corporation incorporated on Women’s Equality Day, August 26, 2006. Its Charter Board of Directors include Luz Borrerro, Betty Rose Bowers, Nancy Hall, Donna Howell, Susan Hitchcock, Julianna McConnell, Myra McElhaney, Diane Rogers, Lucinda Sullivan, Deana Womack, and Lani Wong.

The purpose of the Institute is to bring women together, to provide for non-partisan advocacy, leadership and a voice for women, to hold conferences, seminars and training in support of women’s issues, and to provide recognition of women’s accomplishments across the State of Georgia.
