6th Annual Turknett Leadership Character Awards Luncheon

Inspiritor Award presented to Nellie DukeNellie Dunaway Duke of Carrollton, was the inaugural recipient of the "Inspiritor Award" presented by Turknett Leadership Groups at its Sixth Annual Leadership Character Awards Luncheon, on Monday, February 16th, at Grand Hyatt Hotel in Atlanta. Turknett's Vice President and Event Emcee Susan Hitchcock, said that Lyn and Bob Turknett created their Leadership Character Model to recognize those who meet the core qualities of leadership character. Those qualities are Integrity, Respect and Responsibility. According to President /CEO Lyn Turknett, "Character is about who you are when no one is looking. It is not directly observable, but the qualities others would see in a person of leadership character."

Forty four individuals were nominated in four categories. Finalists receiving awards were Philip Tomlinson of TSYS, for the CEO/President/ Managing Partner category; City of Atlanta's Luz Borrero in the Executive/ Manager category; American Cancer Society's Jack Shipkoski in the Non-Profit Category and Gainesville State College President Dr. Martha Nesbitt in the Education category.

The newly established "Inspiritor Award", presented to Nellie Duke by Dr. Betty Siegel, President Emeritus of Kennesaw State University and CEO of the Siegel Institute of Leadership, Ethics & Character, was created to recognize exceptionally inspiring people who choose leadership, regardless of position, who exemplify standards set in the Turknett Leadership Model, possess unquestioned integrity, treat others with respect and take personal responsibility for the organizations they lead. Duke was nominated by Gainesville State College's Dr. Mary Lou Frank, who is Vice-President of Georgia Women's Institute and the Georgia Woman of the Year Committee. Duke serves as President/ CEO of Georgia Women's Institute, Chair/ CEO of the Georgia Commission on Women, President of Georgia Woman of the Year Committee, Inc. and the Georgia Osteoporosis Initiative. She is also President of Carrollton Unit 143 of the American Legion Auxiliary. A member of numerous charitable, educational and philanthropic organizations, she serves as a Member/ Advisor on fourteen other Boards. Mother of five, grandmother of ten and great-grandmother of three, she and her husband, Henry, live in Carrollton.
